Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

Background on Conviction

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the period, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
